Origami - Microsoft's Answer to IPOD Technology

Computers

Microsoft recently introduced its latest project - The Origami. I know, I know..origami is the ancient art of paper folding. So what has this name got to do with Microsoft latest component? Nothing - so it is being changed to Ultramobile PC. It seems that after a lengthy period of guessing, advertising, and speculating, their newest innovation is a portable computing device capable of running Windows XP and other Windows software.Origami is a combination of advanced media and computer technology that avails both laptop and portable media player abilities and has the potential to become quite a unique option for consumers with its slim, small, notebook appearance - without an accompanying keyboard. It is ultra compact with a touch screen and wireless connectivity. Its sensitive screen responds readily to a tap of the finger or a stylus. Spring will bring two models of Origami - named Ultramobile PC to the market weighing about 2 ½ pounds, an inch or so thick, and being about the size of a large book. Plans are for Ultramobile PC to run a full version of Windows XP and newly developed software for the touchscreen function. Microsoft announced that the Ultramobile PC creates new possibilities for personal computer use. The hardware, developed but not manufactured by Microsoft, has had input in both the design and manufacture of software from its inception. The key concept is to combine the best of Windows Pc and wireless electronic media devices. The screen is wide with easy to see characters and bright enough for good acuity even in dimly lit surroundings. This new device will also have 2 USB ports enabling it to be connected to an outlet if necessary and other features of jacks for connecting digital cameras, headphones, speakers, and card slots. It also has a feature of a builtin onscreen split keyboard that allows input to be typed or 'fingered' in. It has a 60 GB capacity with a battery average of 2 to 3 hours. This device is ideal for commuters and others on the go who want to use their PC but don't want to carry heavy and awkward equipment. Although it is a bit larger than an Ipod or a MP3 player, it does play stored music and display photos and acts as a video device showing films and television shows. One wonders, though, whether Microsoft really thought through their marketing plan because at present, Ultramobile PC appears to be another, somewhat larger, version of Ipod, PDA, and other popular devices. Many media reporters and technophiles believe this project to be less than compelling. One expressed opinion was that while it is not small enough to be considered a pocket device, it is small enough to be kept close and is empowered to perform a variety of tasks - games, productivity, and media consumption - a combination of Playstation gaming, PC, and Ipod. This new wonder is expected to retail for between $600 to $1000.Research and development continue in these areas, and consumers are sure to be seeing more and more useful software for improving the uses and functions of the Ultramobile PC - the Origami. About the author:E.Sanderson writes articles about the latest developments in technology, electronics, and communication. She'd like to inform you about the latest New TV Technology services.

Online Shopping Safety Tips

If you would dearly love to purchase goods online, but are concerned about safety, there are some things you can do to minimise the dangers. For a start, always make sure that the URL address starts with https, rather than just http. If the page has a padlock icon on the page, click on that to check that their security certificate is actually registered to the name of the business. If you use a credit card rather than a debit card to pay the transaction, you can contest any transactions that you think are fraudulent before paying your monthly account. If you must use a debit card, it could pay you to link it to a special bank account that you keep only a small amount of money in.Never give unnecessary information online. You should only need your card number, the expiry date and the code on the back of it. You name and address will also be needed of course, but only supply your phone number and email address if you trust the site. Never give your card PIN, or your social security number. Some sites are specially designed to install malware on your computer, so if the site you are on is offering a deal that seems too good to be true, be suspicious and leave. And never click on an unknown link from your email box.Find great bargains and discounted merchandise in your next online shopping expedition with Deals Direct (http://www.dealsdirect.com.au). A Traveler’s Guide to Laptop Security

  • The facts: • More than 1,700 laptops are lost or stolen every day. That is more than 620,050 a year.• 97% of them are never recovered, according to the FBI. • Data stored on the devices - customer lists, financial data, and correspondence - is critical. • The equipment itself -- laptops, Blackberry's, PDAs, LCD monitors, cell phones - are expensive. • Professional thieves are not interested in the laptop, only its resale value on the open market.Below are the top fifteen tips for protecting your laptop computer:1. When you are traveling with a laptop please carry the laptop with you. Many incidences have happened where laptops were stolen from baggage checked in at airports, or from luggage in storage on buses. Because of the laptop’s weight a lot of individuals opt to check in the laptop with their luggage, but the airlines or bus services are not responsible for lost equipment.I always see fashionable business people carrying laptops in expensive cases. They’re asking for trouble. Those cases say - “Laptop! Laptop! Steal me!”2. When you are traveling by car and you have a laptop with you do not leave the laptop or carrying case in plain view. Electronic gadgets including GSA units, cell phones, PDAs, laptops, portable satellite radios are all prime items for resale. Many units are stolen just to resell and collect cash. It is also safer to put these gadgets in the trunk before you get into the car when leaving for your destination. Many parking lots are monitored by thieves just waiting for someone to put a computer type bag in the trunk. 3. Protect your laptop from the environment. A sudden change in temperature can crack the LCD display. If the car temperature is hot the LCD will crack as well. You do not want to have the laptop near moisture. This will cause the laptop from working, at times permanently. If you had a laptop that was in a hot area and you went to an air conditioned area the laptop will sweat. Keeping it in a carrying case will help prevent this from happening.4. When using a carrying case pick a bag that does not look like a computer bag. You might have someone looking for a computer bag and to see how secure you have it. It only takes a couple of seconds to steal a bag, and with a lot of them looking the same it would be very hard to find your bag with a lot of people around. The second thing that you should be aware of is watching your laptop as it goes through the security check point. There have been cases where a thief has a broken laptop and while in line if they see a similar model they switch trays with your computer with the hopes of you not noticing the switch. The end result is that you wind up with the broken laptop and the thief with your laptop. 5. An unsecured laptop computer is very susceptible to data theft, even without knowing the password, especially if you use it at wireless locations. In order to prevent this from happening to you, the laptop’s hard drive should be encrypted. Encryption is available on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. These operating systems transparently use an encrypted file system, and you can encrypt any file or folder on your computer.6. Passwords are another area of concern for laptop computers. It does not take long to find out what a password is especially if you have a password cracking software. There are even service companies where you can send them certain files from your computer and they will send you the password. There are two places where passwords are essential to the laptop user. The first password is called the BIOS or system password, and the second is the user password so that you can access your applications. The BIOS password prompts you when you first turn on the computer to enter a password.7. Laptops are pretty attractive for thieves. To counter rising laptop theft, a number of companies sell software that silently phones home when it’s eventually reconnected to a network. When software like this is used in conjunction with law enforcement efforts, your chances of getting your equipment back increases dramatically. One software package also has the ability to erase the whole hard drive after the stolen laptop phones home. 8. Many thieves steal the laptop for reselling it and they are not concerned with the contents of the hard drive. If the boot sequence was turned on the thief could use a CD, USB drive or even a floppy to start the machine and wipe it clean. The safest way of protecting the laptop is only allowing the computer to start from the hard drive. The BIOS of the computer manages how the computer starts up and if you use a password to start the computer there is no way a thief can access the hard drive.9. Lock up the laptop. This is pretty obvious, but it is so often overlooked that it has to be included. If a laptop isn’t in a physically secure area, then it should be locked away – in a desk drawer, in a closet, etc. Even in your office, laptops might not be safe. You must realize that cleaning people, security guards and others have keys and they can use them to access your valuables including laptops and company data. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to secure your mobile PC is to use a security cable or lock, with or without an alarm, to attach your laptop to a stationary object. Most laptops have security slots in the side or the back of their case. You should definitely do this in a hotel room if you leave your laptop behind. Or, use a safe that is located in your room to put the laptop into. Do not trust giving it to hotel staff at the front desk. Too many hands have access to their secure area. If you must leave your laptop behind and you do not have a security lock put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door.10. Make sure that you use Internet Security software, spyware prevention software and anti-virus software. You have to protect your laptop computer. Not having Internet Security installed on your laptop is like leaving the keys to your home on the doorstep. Spyware prevention will stop people from stealing information from your computer. Anti-virus software will prevent your computer from getting infected and spreading the infection to another computer. Update this software regularly.11. Make sure you backup all of your data onto a CD, external drive, or send the files over the Internet to another computer or storage area. There are companies that allow home users to back up their data onto their file servers for a small monthly fee.12. Security experts claim that you should engrave your name or company name on a laptop because it would be harder for a thief to fence it. A thief might decide to pass on it. If anything a company asset tag should be placed on the unit.13. You might want to consider buying insurance for your laptop. Many homeowners’ insurance policies don’t cover computers. There are companies out there that specialize in insuring computers.14. Never leave access numbers or passwords in your carrying case. Keeping your password with your laptop is like keeping the keys in your car.15. Use a screen guard or security screen. These guards help prevent people from peaking over your shoulder as you work on sensitive information in a public place.Today’s laptops are ripe targets for thieves. If you follow these basic guidelines and some common sense, you don’t have to give up yours.

Protecting yourself against Phishing Attacks

I'm sure you've all heard of Identity Theft and, more recently, Phishing but do you really understand what they are and how they can affect you? Maybe this will help.Let's start with the basics.Personal InformationThis is information that allows an organisation to identify you, as you. You know that when you contact the bank, your insurance company or just about anyone that has personal information about you, you are required to prove your identity. This process of proof generally comprises you being able to supply your Name; Date of Birth; and Address. On Websites, the proof of identity is typically easier, requiring you to know your USER ID and Password. Forget your Password or UserId?I do all the time! In this day and age, I have to keep 10s of user ids and passwords and I don't mind admitting that I forget one or two of them from time to time. For most sites, this isn't an issue. I simply request a password reminder and it is provided to my registered email address. My logins to Financial Institutions is not that easy to retrieve. I'm required to contact the Call Centre, prove my identity and then the Bank will reset my password. EBay and PayPal have a similar process, conducted online. So what happens when someone else can provide this information? They could well gain access to my personal and private information, or even my financial information.Rest assured! Most organisations have a multi layered system and posing as someone else is becoming increasingly more difficult - but that doesn't mean people won't try.How do these people get this information?Phishing (pronounced Fishing) is a criminal activity using social engineering techniques. Phishers attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Have you ever received an email requesting that you visit a familiar website and update your personal information? I can almost guarantee that, if you are online and have email address, you have received at least one email telling you that you need to confirm your online banking details! When you visit the website, it needs you to verify or update your passwords, credit card numbers, social security number, or even your bank account number. You recognise the business name as one that you’ve conducted business with in the past. So, you click on the convenient “take me there” link in the email and proceed to provide all the information they have requested. Unfortunately, you find out much later that the website is bogus. It was created with the sole intent to steal your personal information. You have just been “phished”."Phishers" will then use this information to gain access to your personal accounts, using the forgotten password type scenario, to exploit them. Can you identify a "Phishing" attempt and how can you protect yourself?Firstly, it is not always easy to identify a "phishing" attempt. If you are "phished" - don't beat yourself up too much, it can happen easily.Let's examine Email "Phishing":"Phishing" Emails are incredibly professional and, when placed side by side with an email from the legitimate organisation look 100% identical. That's because these guys actual use the graphics etc from the real organisations webpage. It is very easy to set the "From" address in an email to be something else, not the email address it is really sent from. E.G My send email address may really be someperson@someplace.com.au however, I can easily configure my email client show the send address as sales@thiscompany.com.au. When you receive the email from me, you could not tell by the "From" address that it was sent from me.The clickable link within the email also appears to take you to the correct site, when in fact it takes you to a fraudulent site. In a lot of cases, the fradulent site will also download some "malware" to your computer which generally monitors your web usage and, in some cases, logs keystrokes and sends them back to the "phishers". Keystroke "malware" is dangerous - it can monitor passwords and user ids and leave you open for even more exploitation. Many of these people are professional criminals. They have spent a lot of time in creating emails that look authentic. Users need to review all emails requesting personal information carefully. When reviewing your email remember that the "From Field" can be easily changed by the sender. While it may look like it is coming from an address that you do business with, looks can be deceiving. So what can you do? Here are some guidelines to follow when you receive an email requesting information:1. NEVER click on the links within the email. If necessary, write the address provided down and manually enter it in your browser window.2. If necessary, contact the organisation directly and ask if they requested that information.3. Check the organisations security policy online. This will define how information will be requested etc.4. Make sure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware software is up to date.5. If in doubt, DO NOTHING with the Email. What about Phone "Phishing"?With phone calls, you should always ask the caller to identify themselves. Ask them to provide the Company Name; and their name or an operator number. If you are concerned, ask for a phone number that you can call them back on.Find the organisation they say they are representing in the phone book and contact them directly. Ask if they are conducting a campaign. On a final note, I really object to being contacted by an organisation and then being asked to provide personal information, so they can confirm that they are speaking to the right person. What about my right to determine they are who they say they are? After all, they've called my phone number.....Unfortunately, there appears to be no process for the authentication to be two way. I generally request a Reference ID and a return contact number. I then confirm the return contact number against the details that I maintain and call them back. If they are unwilling to provide this type of information, I request they put their concern or offer in writing to me. If they are who they say they are, they will have my mailing address. In conclusion, Identity Theft is a real thing. "Phishing" is a common means of gaining someones personal information in order to masquerade as that person - generally for exploitation.I have written a "Pocket Guide to Protecting Your Computer". 7 Ways To Speed Up Your Writing Time

Are you an article writer or an e-book writer? If so, how long does it take you to write? Just a few of these methods, seven to be exact, are outlined below. (1) Comfort – If you would like to write quicker, you need to find a setting that you feel comfortable in. In addition to actually feeling comfortable, you need to be comfortable. Whether you want to work from your bed or outdoors, you are advised to do so. You are also urged to dress comfortably. When writers are comfortable, they are able to not only work quicker, but also produce better work. (2) Distractions – All distractions need to be eliminated. Although this may seem difficult, it doesn’t have to be. For instance, if you are a work-at-home parent, you can try sending your child to daycare, even if it is only one day a week. You can also try working during nap times or even at night, after your child has gone to sleep. The elimination of distractions is a great way to write quicker. In fact, it is also known to reduce or completely eliminate the chances of developing writers block. (3) Typing – Do you consider yourself to be fast at typing? If you type less than fifty words per minute (wpm), you may want to think about taking a typing class. One of the many problems that e-book writers face is that their fingers don’t go as fast as their minds do. Once your typing improves to a quicker speed, you may notice a significant improvement in the amount of time that it takes you to write. (4) Outlines – If you are an e-book writer who currently doesn’t use an outline, you may want to think about doing so. Outlines are relatively easy to develop and they have an unlimited number of benefits. One of those benefits is that you know exactly what to write and how to write it. This means that you can just focus on writing and not necessarily thinking about your next step. This, alone, can save you a considerable amount of time. (5) Spell Check – Spell check, without a doubt, is important to any e-book. That is why it is important that you do it, but you may want to write first and spell check later. If you use a program like Microsoft Word, all of your misspelled words will be highlighted and waiting for you. For that reason you are advised to wait until the end, doing so will eliminate small breaks; breaks that may bring on a case of writers block. (6) Proofreading – As with spell checking, proofreading is extremely important. Many e-book authors like to proofread after writing a chapter or a paragraph. If at all possible, you are urged not to do this. You may want to write now and proofread later. Once you get on a roll with writing, you may not want to stop. In the end, you may find that it results in you being able to finish your work quicker. (7) Time – You are advised to not worry about time. Even if you are on a deadline, you are urged to take your time and not think about it. Worrying about just how much time it takes you to write will have a negative impact on your work. In fact, it is likely to result in more mistakes. Those mistakes take time to fix. If you are looking to write quicker, you should try focusing on your writing, rather than time itself. You may be surprised just how much it helps! The above mentioned write quicker methods are just a few of the many that exist. As you likely already know, what works for someone else, might not work for you. With that in mind, you are still advised to give the above mentioned approaches a try. What do you have to loose? Writing faster is a lot easier than many people think. If you put your mind to it, could you be writing faster in no time at all. How to Get Paid for Taking Surveys and Maximize Your Income

It is not a secret that millions of people worldwide get paid for taking surveys, i.e. sharing their opinion on a product or service, which is then used by companies to build an effective marketing strategy. Some people participate in surveys just for fun, while the majority is motivated by the opportunity to get paid for taking surveys. The rate of success also varies: from occasional rewards of a few bucks to a regular source of additional income. Of course, the promises of thousands of dollars in return to your participating in online surveys are unrealistic, to put it mildly. If making money was so simple, then why on earth would anybody bother about a regular job? This is the first thing you should realize about paid surveys: the niche abounds in scams; therefore, each website offering you to get paid for taking surveys should be taken with a share of skepticism. Some things to consider before registering with an online survey company are:1. Is registration free? Will you have to pay for anything on any stage later?2. What are the terms and conditions?3. How many surveys are available in average?4. How do you get paid for taking surveys?5. Are you allowed to take as many surveys as you want?No reputable survey site will ever charge you for anything. It is you who should get paid for taking surveys, not them! If the company wants you to pay to enroll in their program, simply move to the next one. In order to register and get paid for taking surveys you should only provide your personal details (which will be used to determine whether you qualify for this job or not), and then you start getting notified by email whenever there is a survey for you.Don’t expect to get invitations every day. If you want to maximize your income from paid surveys, sign up with as many sites as you can, but use different emails if possible. Select best paying companies. Some companies will pay you according to the number of accumulated points; others will have a minimum amount needed to request a check or can pay as soon as the survey is completed. You can get paid for taking surveys, testing a product or service, participating in focus groups, etc with rewards that may vary as greatly as $2 and $200. Some of the legitimate survey companies are Global Test Market, My Survey, and Greenfield – to start with. Once you are familiar with the system, it will be easier for you to tell a scam form a genuine company. After that, you can sign up with more online companies and get paid for taking surveys on a regular basis, increasing your family’s income with minimum effort.Davion is a successful online entrepreneur who goes hunting for the hottest income opportunities. Starting Your Own Blog

by: John Taylor
I was sitting in my local Internet Cafe yesterday, I like to get away from my 'home office' from time to time and it's a great place to go for a cup of Espresso and to meet interesting people. The rather attractive lady sitting next to me was typing away furiously and, when she had finished, I asked her what she was writing - I'm interested in learning how other people use the Internet... some people call that being nosey!
It turns out she was a 'Blogger' and she was updating her web site through a web browser. She was really interested in vegetarian cookery and she was adding a new restaurant review to her blog.
If you spend any time at all online these days you simply can't avoid reading something about blogs, they are becoming increasingly more popular; and they are a great way of building an online presence without the need for any technical knowledge. A blog is an abbreviation of the term 'web log' which is a relatively simple content management system.
Quite a few years ago, web surfers began collecting information and interesting links that they encountered during their online travels. As time passed they started to create logs of the information that they collected and they soon started to develop their own web logs. These web logs enabled them to update the information and links as often as they wished.
Blogs are more permanent than posts to an online forum or to a discussion list, they are much more dynamic than the traditional style home pages. They are also more personal than standard journaling, and definitely more public than diaries. A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary site. So, there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.
There are a few common characteristics of a blog, but there may be slight variations within the classification. Some blogs provide succinct descriptions of links within the chosen theme of the blog. Some others contain commentary and links to the news of the day. A few are endless stream of blurts about the writer’s day. Others are - political blogs, intellectual blogs, some are hilarious and some topic driven. They are all - Weblogs.
As mentioned earlier, blogs are posts that are short, informal and sometimes deeply personal no matter what the topic of discussion is. They can be characterized by their conversational tone.
If a person has a web presence but is disappointed with static homepage - if an elegant treatment of posts on a global platform is what they want, then ‘blogging’ provides an ideal platform. They may also consider blogging if they are seeking feedback from their chosen audience.
Weblogs are definitely the mavericks of the online world. Two of their greatest strengths are their ability to filter and disseminate information to a widely dispersed audience, and their position outside the mainstream of mass media.
There are many different options available to the new and seasoned blogger alike. Some blog scripts are available for you to install on your own domain and these require at least a basic understanding of FTP and HTML. There are many hosted blog services available some free and some paid. If you are serious about blogging then I would strongly recommend that you use the best system that you can afford and that meets your needs.
I personally have used the 'Moveable Type' stand-alone script and although quite complex to install, I found it very easy to use. My recommended choice of hosted blogging service would have to be the Blog4Cash.com system that includes a wide variety of high quality features and has a built in two tier affiliate scheme that enables you to generate a recurring income from all your referrals!

Having A User Friendly Website

by: Jean Sutherland
Let's look at what your user wants to see at your website.
1. No Flash
For many who visit your website time is money for you and for them. The last thing people need to see is a slow loading flash front page. Unless your flash page is very unique and interesting enough that it will hold their attention I suggest you loose it. For people on dialup, and yes there are many around the world, a flash page is a download nightmare for them.
2. Page Load Time
There is nothing worse than going to a website and waiting more than 15 seconds for that page to load. Many of your visitors don't have the time to wait for a web page to load and nor should they. Timewise, many people will go on to something else if your page is slow to load. Ten years ago 15 seconds and more might have been acceptable but in this day and age of high speed internet this is highly unacceptable. Check this free site for help with load time for your website. Dcotor HTML http://www.doctor-html.com
3. Graphics
Do you hate it when your gonto a site for information and finding missing graphics. Worse than missing graphics are graphics that do not at least have an ALT tag which would at least give your visitor some idea of what the graphic was about. When you have ALT tags it also allows search engines to recognize all the content on your site. Make sure to use good keywords and use them often on your page, as it will help you rank higher in the search engines. Use the free link verification program at XENU http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html to ensure that all your graphics are loading.
4. Links Not Working
One of my major pet peeves is visiting a site and clicking on a link and finding it does not work. This is one of the fastest ways to loose a potential customer. Broken links are something you should be checking on a daily basis. This is your bread and butter and you can not afford to loose even one potential customer. Again, XENU at http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html is an excellent free program to help you keep your website in tip top shape. Also note, search engines do not like missing links and you risk your ranking with them if your site is not up to snuff. Xenu will give you a comprehensive report that shows all broken links and their corresponding pages.
5. Making Your Index Page As Small As Possible
The old saying that time is money is never more true than when someone visits your first page. Getting it to load quickly is one of your main objectives. This mean you need to run your page through an HTML optimizer. Doctor HTML http://www.doctor-html.com, a free website, can be invaluable to you when it comes to shrinking your page. Your site will still look the same but will take less time to load.
6. HTML Validation
Validating your HTML will help your visitors to have no problems while visiting your website. With valid HTML, browsers will function correctly at your site and with future browser updates people will have a smooth transition. Tidy GUI is a great free program for fixing errors and reducing the size of you page. It can be downloaded at http://www.emailpromotions.net/download/TidyGUI.exe
7. Reduce The Size Of Your Graphics
The size of the graphics on your site, and these graphics not loading quickly, can be one of the major reasons for your page to load slowly and for your visitors to leave. Always shrink the size of your images and watch how much faster your website will load. Spinwave http://www.spinwave.com/crunchers.html is a free online cruncher that can offer a maximum compression of approximately 30%.
8. Your Visitors Browser
Not everyone uses Internet Explorer and that leaves you with the problem of making sure that visitors to your site, using Netscape, Mozilla and others, all see the same thing. Unless you ensure compatibility then different browsers are going to display things differently than what you designed or what you see. With some browsers some people may not be able to see anything on your site. To check your website on different browsers visit Web Page Backward Compatibility Viewer at http://www.delorie.com/web/wpbcv.html
9. Contacting You
No website owner can afford to take its customers for granted. When they need to get in touch with you in order to ask questions, it is imperative that you have easy to find contact information. Nothing is more frustrating than having to search a site to find how to reach you. Your visitors are your livelyhood...keep it simple for your customers. It makes for a great relationship with your visitors.
10. Spell Check
Last but not least, check your spelling. No one likes to read a page filled with spelling errors. Most HTML software offers this simple service and it should always be the last thing your check before you upload your page.

Understanding Broadband - Are You Ready To Upgrade?

by: David Jackson
Are you ready to upgrade your residential service to DSL or business service to real broadband or T1? Well, the answer lies in what you need. Before you can realize your needs, you must understand more of what the word broadband really means. Below I will try to give you some realtechnical terms broken down for a better understanding.
First of all, you must know some of the jargon! The word broadband itself simply is defined as a high speed Internet service that gives you continuous access to the Internet on a consistent basis. Broadband includes a technology called ADSL which stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line and requires a special modem to access the line. This technology uses standard copper telephone lines to provide Internet access speeds from 1.5 to 9 megabytes per second. DSL technologies or Digital Subscriber Lines use a higher frequency than standard telephone communication.
There are several types of DSL configurations including ADSL or Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Lines, HDSL or High data rate DSL, and VDSL or Very High Data Rate DSL. A DSL line dynamically increases the capacity of ordinary copper wire. Since the signal is stronger the closer you are to the DSL Access Multiplexor or DSLAM the faster your signal will be the closer you are to the DSL provider's Central Office or distribution point. DSL lines are typically used for small business and residential customers. Of course as your needs grow, it should be understood; that the more data you need to transfer, the larger the pipe (Internet access line or physical copper wire) you need to transport the data. This is where more sophisticated forms of broadband come in for business use. The technical terms for this type of broadband is measured by the amount of data that the line transfers. T1 -Transmits data in the range of 1.5 million bits per second and primarily used by small and medium sized business with heavy upload and Internet traffic. A T-1 line is usually leased by bandwidth used. Typical uses are large graphic files, photographs, sound files, music, video, etc. However, your company should evaluate the amount of data and computers that are connected for Internet Access at the same time. T1 lines in the United States carry a 24 pulse code modulation (PCM) signal using time-division multiplexing (TDM). These lines use copper wire which usually connect major metropolitan areas. There are a number of high quality companies that offer T1 Broadband and you will find that prices do vary so it is important that you compare.
You may also find that your local cable provider may have introduced their version of broadband which actually can emulate one side of a T1 connection. However, you should be aware... you may actually get 1.5 mpbs on the download side, but when you try to upload a file, your bandwidth is cut down to about 1/10th. A cable connection is made for residential customers to surf the Internet with great speed and download files, but not made for you to upload with great speed. This slow upload limit is the major difference between a real T1 line and cable.
There are many types of broadband connections that are much faster circuit than T1, these range from T3 (3 times faster than T1) to OC-48, and a frame relay connection which really are the same thing just MUCH larger pipes (lines) that can transmit the data. I have found while working with broadband providers you really need a persona coach to help guide you through the process. Not only can personal coaches such as ImageLink Networks guide you through the red tape, the efficiency that comes from our presence and telecom knowledge will save you time and money in the end. It is important to seek an unbiased opinion and research for the best real time price for your T1 line. Broadband is a commodity, and changes as new subscribers come online in specified areas. To make a long story shorter, you are ready for a broadband connection if you are tired of waiting for a standard dial up to connect and download.
Do not be confused, dial up companies use a standard phone line to connect you to their server to bring you an Internet connection. One thing is for sure, if you ever experience a broadband connection via cable, T1, T3, DS-3, or better you will never ever go back to dial up.

The Dark Side of P2P File Sharing

by: Bill Paulk
P2P file sharing programs are free. Period. But there are P2P scam sites out there that want you to pay them instead. P2P scam sites are rogue companies that have set up shop to fleece unsuspecting music downloaders looking for file sharing programs by charging a fee for an otherwise free service.
No P2P file sharing software costs money. Exceptions would be a site asking members to make a monetary donation to help pay for bandwidth, hosting costs, and other administrative costs.
Some P2P file sharing programs offer "pro" versions of their free software. But again, their basic service is free to the public. I want you to fully understand this, because paying a P2P scam site money can not only make your wallet a bit lighter, it can also make your computer vulnerable to dangerous spyware.
That's right. These scam sites are only interested in making money off you. As well as actually taking your money by fooling you into paying them, they'll make money off you by installing spyware on your PC, so that they can get paid by sharing your online habits and personal information with others.
For music download beginners, all of this can be very confusing. Why? Because these scam sites advertise all over the Internet. Search engines return results chockful of these scams alongside the real P2P file sharing programs; their banner ads riddle the Internet landscape; sites are promoting these scams to get their piece of your money.
Most real P2P programs don't advertise much on the Internet. The reason is that they're not money makers. It takes money to advertise, and who has more money--the free P2P file sharing programs or the scam artists? You guessed it. P2P relies on word of mouth. The scam sites rely primarily on advertising.
How Can I Tell a P2P Scam Site?
This is the easy part, if you know what you're looking for. P2P scam sites often use phrases like 100% Legal, which is absolutely untrue. This is a trick they use to prey on people interested in P2P file sharing programs, but who are worried (rightly) about Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) lawsuits. Keep in mind that sharing and downloading of copyrighted files is, at this moment, an illegal activity.
Another tactic is to use fake endorsements and recommendations from legitimate companies. Other cons are to use phrases like Direct Downloads!, Get Access Now!, Download Unlimited Free Music!, and other phrases that are promising you things they absolutely CANNOT deliver.
How Does It Work & How are They Doing It?
To be honest, I do not know the ins and outs of P2P scam sites. But I know this: all P2P file sharing programs are free. Think about it a moment. It is because music files are being shared free of charge (without artists receiving royalties) that organizations like the RIAA are mad and suing.
These P2P scam sites are merely taking your money, downloading a little spyware to your PC, then connecting you to one of the real P2P file sharing programs.
This is all convoluted by the nature of P2P, which is a series of servers networking files to one another. Unless you're buying your music MP3 downloads from a legitimate company, either per song/album or through a monthly subscription, you cannot be sure where your music is coming from.
The legal status of P2P file sharing programs is confusing. We know that MP3 files themselves are not illegal. For example, it's legal to possess MP3s, to rip your CDs to your hard drive, and to burn CDs for your personal use. But, by sharing and/or downloading these files, you are breaking copyright laws. To my knowledge, P2P scam sites are not actually breaking any laws. But why pay for something you don't have to?
One of the most common techniques these scam artists use is to set up sites that are misspellings or derivations of popular P2P file sharing programs. KaZaA is probably the most hijacked name being used these days.
Other sites may not actually charge you anything at all, but they'll "give you the software for free" if you give them your email address. This too is a scam. Because once again, they're just sending you along to a proper P2P program, but after collecting your email address, they're selling it to third parties. Don't give these scammers any of your personal information!
If you're on a website you trust, even this website, you may see ads by these scam artists, preaching their lies about 100% blah, blah, blah. For your own security, don't click on the links. They're still scams. (Many independent websites rely on ads to pay the bills. We don't always have full control over what advertisements appear on our sites. Keep in mind that most online advertisements are arranged and distributed by third-party companies who pair up advertisements with appropriate keywords. So a page that discusses "music downloads" is likely to have an ad from a scam site singing their own false praises.)
On this note, there are sites all over the Internet that actually promote P2P scam sites. Why? I have my opinions. First, these scam sites are paying large sums of money to affiliates who promote their sites. For example, a scam site may be charging you $29.95 for their non-service. Well, they're paying affiliates over half (I've seen the pay-out as high as 75%) of that just for getting you, the visitor, to their scam sites.
I Think I've Used One of these Scam Sites. What Do I Do Now?
Stop! Right now, stop using that service. If you've got some type of monthly payment with them, stop paying them. Cancel your "membership," contact your bank or credit card company, and stop paying them immediately! Secondly, your computer has probably have been infected by spyware, and you need to remove it right away. I recommend purchasing spyware-removal software like Pest Patrol because they do the best job at clearing out spyware parasites.
If you've been pulled into a scam site, just rack it up to experience. Their ad copy is very convincing, and you just wanted to "be legal" while downloading. Take heart in knowing that you're not alone. But you're better off now, with this information at your disposal.
In my opinion, this is another reason to consider not using P2P file sharing programs as a means to get your online music. I think that these P2P scam sites will increase in number, and will use more clever tactics to get your money and your information. Until the peer-to-peer communities are regulated in some way, I fear that these types of activities will get worse before they improve.

Free Internet Access

by: Tom the Webmaster
Internet access can be expensive. The high monthly fees that some Internet Service Providers charge is ridiculous. As a result, many people use their local library in order to obtain free internet access.
Is it possible to have Free Internet Access from the comfort of your home? YES, if you know where to look. This is a little secret that the major Internet Service Providers don’t want you to know about. Free Internet Service is available from other companies.
As the result of charging high monthly access fees, the major ISP’s monopolize everything with their advertising campaigns. They can afford large advertising budgets because you are paying for it on a monthly basis.
Get your FREE CD and have internet access. This sounds great. You can find these free CD’s all over the place from the major ISP’s. However, after you install the free CD and type in your credit card number, get ready for the high monthly cost.
Many consumers have complained about their access running very slowly unless they sign on at 2:00 in the morning. How many people want to get up at 2 AM just so they can get on the internet? These major ISP’s have flooded the market with their free CD’s and consumers have signed up for service. Consequently, there are hundreds or possibly thousands of people trying to log on and surf the internet at the same time in a given area. As a result, consumers are stuck with slow access and have to wait a long time for websites to be displayed.
Great News! There is an alternative to these high priced ISP’s. You may not have heard of them before because they don’t have the same advertising budget as the big companies. A free or low cost ISP can’t afford to flood the market with free CD’s. However, no need to worry, they can provide you with Free Internet Access.
Here is a little secret that the major Internet Service Providers don’t want you to know. A Free ISP and a high-priced ISP give you the exact same access to the internet. There is no difference between the two. They are both allowing you access to the internet. Moreover, a free ISP might get you on the internet quicker and have faster page loads.
There are two methods of obtaining free internet access.
1. Free Unlimited Access with participation in a Sponsor’s Offer Program.
http://www.2get2.net
http://www.surfthewebfree.net
http://www.address.com
http://www.hey-ya.net
The first method of obtaining free internet access is by signing up with an ISP that requires you to participate in their Sponsor’s Offer Program. In reality, the sponsors are paying for your internet access. In return, they want you to visit them and participate in their programs. Use some caution with these ISP’s. Most of the offers are free but some require a cost to participate.
2. Free Unlimited Access that is Ad-supported.
http://www.juno.com
http://www.netzero.net
The second method of obtaining free internet access is by signing up with an ISP that is Ad-Supported. This is a great alternative. When you are searching the internet, you will see ads on your screen that are displayed from the sponsors. These sponsors are advertising their products and services but you do not have to pay anything.
There is another Free ISP that needs to be mentioned. MyFreei.com offers you 10 free hours per month. If you go over the 10 hours, they charge you a $1.00/hour up to $10.00. Thus, the maximum charge for unlimited internet access is $10.00/month. The good news about MyFreei.com is that you don’t have to worry about any ads or pop-ups while you are surfing. In addition, you don’t have to participate in any partner sponsorship program.
http://www.myfreei.com
Take your time and research the above ISP’s. Throw your free CD’s in the garbage and get Free Internet Access.

network storage

By: Dean Barnard
The data space is exploding and the cost of memory is reducing with each coming day. Today's organizations are creating zillions of bytes of data everyday and each bit requires storage. Paper information is being replaced by digital systems. On the entertainment front, newer formats are being developed to provide exceptional visual clarity which again requires storage. Video, audio and multimedia explosion has created a need for storage unheard of in the past. Business, finance and telecom have been the strongest adopters of storage networks as both these verticals have to deal with enormous databases. They are the biggest adopters of SAN and this can be attributed to their increased customer base and deployment of applications to gain a competitive advantage. The widespread implementation of applications like Enterprise resource planning, Supply chain management and Customer relationship management all of which generate a huge amount of data ,is driving the adoption of network storage . In addition companies wishing to implement disaster recovery systems find it easier to do so after consolidating their data. With the exponential rise in the acceptance of storage networks, the need for direct attached storage has plummeted .It is felt that the requirement of direct storage will go down further because of the obvious benefits that network storage provides. With the rise in internet traffic and extensive use of wide area networks, network storage devices have become more popular as compared to direct storage. It has been found that Data utilization in direct storage is below fifty per cent. Consequently, organizations have come to the conclusion that networked storage is better than DAS (Direct attached storage) .As on date network storage occupies more than eighty percent of storage space. It is not only the data volumes which are increasing but also the number of copies and duplication of data. This has lead to data explosion and is a major challenge to manage these volumes. With 50 % growth year on year in data due to automation and digitization, data is fragmented. Hence there is more need for storage networks. The biggest advantage of network storage is expandability. One can simply add more storage by adding a NAS device. In a DAS environment if a server is down, it means a temporary loss of data, till the server is up and running again. In network storage, the data is available all the time irrespective of the server condition or state. The other key reason is the regulatory compliance. To meet statutory obligations companies are forced to store data in more than one location. Direct storage lacks expandability and redundancy. It is therefore more suitable for standalone installations. In this modern era when everything is networked the concept of a separate storage device for each and every computer has become redundant. Network storage on the other hand, is more versatile , modular and gives multiple options for storage. Data security is another reason for preferring network storage as against a direct storage device.

Build a Local Area Network

By: SAGAR
Introduction If you want to transfer some of your data files from one computer to another in your office what will you do? One option you have is to take a floppy or CD and copy the data into it from source computer and go to destination computer and download the file in it. This method is very much time consuming and also you can not copy the data more then 1.44MB in floppy and around 800MB in CD. What if you have more than 2GB or more data to transfer? Here we can use LAN. A LAN is a group of two or more computers that can share information and resources. You can have 1000’s of computer in your LAN depending on the size of your organization as long as the computers are kept in one building or location. Here I am going to tell you how to build a small Local Area Network of 5-10 computers. First of all we need to know the equipments that are required to setup a LAN. Computers: - Obviously you need 2 or more computers to build a network because one computer can not make a Network Cables: - Depending on your network size and utilization you can select the category of the cables. For a small network you can use CAT5 cable which supports 10/100Mbps speed. However you have option to purchase Cat 6 Cable also which support speed of up to 1Gbps. Here I will use CAT5 Cable. (Want to know more about CAT5 click here) Hub / Switch: - This is a device the will be put in a central location and all the PCs will connect to it. These devices can be of 4, 8, 16, or 24 ports. They come with more ports also. These days switches are being used everywhere as they are more advance then HUB. NIC: - Network Interface cards are required for you PCs. Here also you have option to get a card of 10/100 or 10/100/1000Gbps speed. Again it depends on your requirement and budget. One end of network cable will connect to NIC in your computer and another end will go to switch. Note: - Most of the computers these days comes with built in network card so you don’t really need to purchase NIC if you already have one on your computer’s motherboard. RJ45 Connector: - These are small jacks that need to be punched at both ends of cables. You don’t need to buy these connectors separately because readymade cables are available in market but of course if the desired length cable is not available then you will have to get the RJ45 Connectors and punch them at both ends of cable as per the cabling standard. Once you have all the equipments you are ready to do connectivity among your computers and some windows settings. Follow the steps below to get your network up and running. Step1: - Open your computers one by one and install the NIC. As I mentioned above if you have built in network card on your computer’s motherboard then you don’t need to do this activity. Better you buy PC with built in network card this way you can save lots of time. Step2:- Connect all the computers one by one to your hub/switch. Once you connect all the computers just power on the switch. Step3: - Now you have you to do some settings in your PC. All the PCs should have a unique identification so that another computer on network can identify it. Just in human beings we know people with their names, in computers they identify each other with their unique IP Address. These are 32 bit octets in the form of 0 and 1. We write IP address in the decimal form like 192.168.1.1. You have two options to provide IP address one is manual by sitting on each computer and typing the IP address and another is through DHCP Server. You can say DHCP server as a service of Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server which automatically provide IP address to computers as soon as they boot. (Click on DHCP to know more about it.) For a small network of 10-20 PCs you don’t need DHCP server but for big network it would be very confusing and time consuming to provide IP address manually. In our scenario you can give IP address manually because we are setting up a network of just 10 PC. Now log in to PCs with administrative privilege and follow the steps below to give IP address to PCs. a. Click on Start – Settings – Network Connection and then double click on Local Area Connection. b. From the new Window click on properties and on the new window scroll down to select internet protocol TCP/IP. Double click on it or click on properties to give IP address. c. On the opened window give an IP address in the space provided. Just below IP address there is an option of subnet mask. As soon as you will give the IP address the subnet mask will come automatically depending on the Network Class you have selected. (Click on Network Class to know more about it.) Once you are done just save the settings by clicking on apply and OK. Repeat all 3 steps above on all your computers but remember to give unique IP address to each computer. You can check the connectivity among the computers by running a command called PING on each computer. Just go to command prompt and type ping IP ADDRESS (For example Ping 192.168.1.1) you should get reply from another computer which has the IP address 192.168.1.1, remember the PC you are trying to ping should be switch ON. If you get a message saying REQUEST TIME OUT that means the PC you are trying to ping is switch off or there is some problem in the connectivity. So you will have to check it. These settings are enough to get your LAN up and running how ever in IP settings page you have some more options that you can define as long as you have installed these services in you network. For example DNS, Gateway or WINS, you can click on each of these words to know more about them.

Email Marketing For New Businesses

By: RBurko
Email marketing software is an essential tool in the arsenal of many existing business. But when you're starting a new business, there are so many items and considerations to keep in mind that it's easy to let such an important tool slip through the cracks. That can be a costly mistake for many startups. Successful businesses know that the sooner you start taking advantage of email marketing software to promote your business and stay in touch with your customers, the better your results will be in the long-run. While you may already have a large to-do list before getting your business up and running, here are some of the reasons why starting to use an email marketing program should be one of your key items: - When you launch, you'll want to make an impact. You've been working hard on setting up your new business and ironing out the details for a long time. Now it's show time: time to let the world know about your new venture. Top marketers know that an effective launch is a key element to a new business' long-term success. A new company launch is interesting news to your business' industry and the community around you. You may not have an opportunity to offer these people such interesting news for a long time, so you have to take advantage of this key opportunity. In order to make the biggest bang with your launch, you'll want to spread the news to the maximum number of people. It's important to start early: start collecting the names and email addresses or your friends, family, business community, potential leads and industry colleagues. Every time you make a relevant contact, ask them if it's ok to add them to your email list. This way, by the time you launch, you'll have a good list of people who are interested in your business. Most email marketing software programs will also allow you to include a ‘forward to a friend' link in your emails, so when you're sending out your launch announcement to friends and family, you can encourage them to lend you a helping hand by passing on the news to everyone they know. A great way to encourage this act is to include a special launch offer, such as an e-coupon or discount. Email marketing software templates will typically include room for such offers, so including them in your email will be as easy as point and click. - When you launch, you'll probably be running on a tight budget Launching a new business tends to be a costly undertaking. history of Microsoft Exchange 2007

Microsoft Exchange 2007 is collaborative software meant to aid people who are involved in the same tasks achieve their goals. But how did it all start? What and when were the bases for this software set and what improvements have been made over the years?
The migration from the ‘legacy XENIX-based messaging system’ to Exchange began in 1993 and by 1995 500 users were already using the first version. By April 1996 there were already 32000 users who migrated to this environment.
Exchange Server 4.0 was introduced to the public in June 1996 as an upgrade for the Microsoft Mail 3.5. In 1997, there were two other versions released, Exchange 5.0 and 5.5. The dawn of the new millennium marked the release of the Exchange Server 2000, which overcame a large number of the limitations the previous version suffered from, but it also had some difficulties when it came to upgrade.
The predecessor of Microsoft Exchange 2007, the 2003 version, eradicated the upgrade difficulties, allowing the users to slowly migrate to the new environment without any prolonged downtimes or unnecessary expenses. It also had a number of improvements when compared to the previous versions, like new applications and better data recovery options.
Until the Microsoft Exchange 2007 was released, there were a lot of people that were uncertain as far as the future of the product goes. This was due to the fact that the release of the add-on Edge Services was dropped, even though it was announced in 2005.
The main purpose for the Exchange software is electronic mail, tasks and contacts, calendaring and other similar activities. The release of the Microsoft Exchange 2007 marked the integration of voice mails, better filtering, and a new interface of Outlook Web Access.
Microsoft Exchange 2007 support platforms are more ‘new age’ to point out the substantial improvements that this type of hardware can bring to this product. It runs only on 64-bit versions of Windows Server, which means that if you use 32-bit software and hardware, both will need to be replaced.
Microsoft Exchange 2007 support for clusters has been dramatically improved. As opposed to its predecessor, the 2003 version, which allowed the active-active node clustering, Exchange 2007 support for this type of clustering has been removed due to low performance.
You may be able to find a service provider that hosts this software and provide Exchange 2007 support round the clock. You can also search the internet for more information regarding whatever it is you want to know about this product.
